Virgil Abloh has been LV Men's Art Director for One Year

Author:Emily 2019-06-25

A few months after the death of fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld, the French fashion industry finally ushered in a spectacular fashion show. This is the 2020 spring and summer menswear collection brought by Virgil Abloh who is a creative director of LV menswear series. This is also his third big fashion show since the first anniversary of the LV men's collection.

According to the British "Guardian" report, the fashion show was arranged in front of Dauphine Square in the LVMH French headquarters building. This site is located next to cobbled streets and French cafés. You can find the feeling of deja vu in various scenes such as movie scenes, theme parks, and love in Paris. You can even see Notre Dame in the square. Guests including indie musicians Frank Ocean and Lewis Hamilton can explore souvenir stalls, French bistros, bookstores, a balloon artist and bouncy castle. The LV's trademark is also ubiquitous, on the table cloth, on the mini Eiffel Tower, and on the bouncy castle.

Different from Off-White's street fashion style, this men's big fashion show is more romantic. Flowers are everywhere: there is a model wearing a lace-brimmed hat woven from flowers, a hand with a handbag full of wildflowers, and a model wearing an embroidered trousers. The color selection is mainly based on the "spring" color such as white, pink, water blue, and smoke gray. In addition, the costume accessories worn by the models include gardening tools such as gloves, Como and Wellington boots. The spectator seems to be in the garden, which is probably a rare experience for fans of Abloh.

These flowers and natural elements are connotative. In the show guide, Abloh writes that he uses flowers to metaphorize diversity. This guide also attaches a map detailing the birthplace of the catwalk model and the birthplace of their parents. "Young is universal. We are all one. We are the world."

Abloh also has a pioneering work in this big fashion show, which adds some elements to women's wear, such as a model wearing a skirt, another wearing a soft chiffon top, and a letter printed with the words "Louis Vuitton" pants.

If Karl Lagerfeld is still alive, I am afraid that Virgil Abloh will appreciate the promotion and display of the brand. However, his boldness also has a controversial time.

In the LV2019 autumn and winter men's collection held in January in this year, Abloh was inspired by the late popular song Michael Jackson to design a series of men's clothing. However, at the Sundance Film Festival a week later, HBO premiered the documentary "Leaving Neverland" about Michael Jackson's child molestation case, and the outside world was in utter disappointment. In desperation, LV announced in two months that it would not reproduce and sell any design clothing directly related to Michael Jackson.

Originally this series of clothing should enter the market in the summer. The design includes a pleated shirt that is similar to Michael Jackson's "Remember Time" music video, and a flag print collection inspired by the song "We are the World." There is also a pullover, hoodie, shirt and trousers with the musical character the Wiz cartoon character, the 1978 all-black version of the show starring Michael Jackson.

Abloh responded to the incident in the Women's Daily, saying, "I know that this documentary has caused an emotional rebound. I strongly condemn any form of child abuse, violence or violation of any human rights", "I am doing this big show." The purpose is to refer to the pop culture artist Michael Jackson. This show is only a reference to his well-known public life part, and he influenced the cultural heritage of a whole generation of artists and designers."

More than a year before March, Virgil Abloh has just served as creative director of the LV menswear collection. He is also the founder of Off-White, a premium streetwear brand founded in 2013 and headquartered in Milan, Italy. Off-White has a very strong fan base, and the brand's limited edition shows are sold out immediately after entering the market. LV's parent company LVMH invited Abloh to take over the role of men's creative director, which also valued his great appeal among street fashion fans.
